The ‘Spiritual Home of Australian Cricket’, Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) is one of the 2022 World T20 Cup venues. The 1,00,000-seater stadium is the largest stadium in the Southern Hemisphere and also the 2nd largest cricket stadium in the world after Narendra Modi Stadium. It is a multipurpose stadium used for cricket and Australian rules football. MCG is the home ground of Renegades franchise in Australian T20 League and the domestic Victoria cricket team. The first-ever Test match and ODI (60-over format) was also played at this very venue in 1877 and 1971 respectively.
History of Melbourne Cricket Ground
Established in 1853 on the site of Richmond Park by the Melbourne Cricket Club (MCC) committee, the first official test match at MCG was played between Australia and England on 15-19 March, 1877. Victoria scored the highest ever first class Test score of 1107 against New South Wales in the 1926-27 domestic season. At the time of World War 2, the ground was used for military purposes by the US Army, the RAAF and the Royal Australian Air Force. During the summer of each year, the traditional boxing day test match is also held at this legendary ground.
T20 Cricket Stats at Melbourne Cricket Ground
Australia faced India in the first-ever T20 match held at the MCG on 1 February 2008. The Mecca of Australian cricket, MCG pitch offers generous bounce to pacers but doesn’t offer spinners any help. It is one of the toughest venues to hit 4s and 6s due to lengthy boundaries and a paradise for bowlers for the very same reason.

Iconic Matches at Melbourne Cricket Ground
Pakistan faced Australia in the solitary T20I during the 2010 tour. Aussie skipper M. Clarke won the toss and elected to bat first on the slow MCG track. On the back of small contributions from D. Warner, M. Clarke and D. Hussey, Aussies posted a timid but fighting total of 127. A blistering 64-run knock from K. Akmal set Pakistan on course to chase down the target easily. But S. Tait inspired a comeback in the final 5 overs for the Kangaroos as Pakistan batting lineup collapsed like a pack of dominoes. In one of the most nail-biting finishes at MCG, Australia triumphed over Pakistan by 2 runs.
