Unique Captaincy Records at World T20 Cup

One of the hardest things in cricket is playing in a stadium full of spectators at the biggest international tournaments. However, the hardest thing is leading a side full of talented cricketers to the ultimate glory of winning a major international trophy. One such major tournament is the World T20 Cup. As the Super-12 stage of 2022 World T20 Cup is about to start, let’s look at some of the most unique captaincy records created at the World T20 Cup over the years.

Best Win Percentage

Captain : K. Williamson

Country : New Zealand

In his 15 year-career, Kiwi skipper K. Williamson has been efficient in batting as well as leadership. The stalwart of New Zealand cricket for more than a decade, ‘Consistent Kane’ displayed first signs of being an able general in 2007 U19 World ODI Championship. Williamson made his captaincy debut for the Kiwis in 2016 World T20 Cup held in India. One of the four pillars of the ‘Fab Four’, he has scored 1803 runs in 63 innings as a captain in T20Is.

However, the most unique record established by Williamson as a captain is his winning percentage (75.00%) at the biggest stage. Since 2016, he has led the Black Caps 12 times in the World T20 Cup and emerged victorious on 9 occasions. Out of the 3 losses he suffered as a captain, the most heartbreaking defeat came against neighbours Australia in the 2021 World T20 Cup final held in Dubai. A player tailored for biggest occasions, Williamson led from the front and scored 85 runs in just 48 deliveries to guide Kiwis to a total of 172. However, blistering half-centuries from D. Warner and M. Marsh ensured Aussies added another trophy to their collection.

Williamson will lead New Zealand once again in this prestigious tournament. The Kiwis are placed in Group 1 of Super-12 stage alongside defending champions Australia and heavyweights England.

Most Wins as Captain

Captain : MS Dhoni

Country : India

Any list regarding unique captaincy records is incomplete without the name of former Indian skipper MS Dhoni. The legend of Mahi – The Captain Cool began at the first World T20 Cup held in South Africa, when he made a young and hungry Team India, the first-ever T20 Champions of the world. Arguably the greatest cricket captain of all-time, Dhoni never looked back since the inaugural World T20 Cup and created several records.

One such special record is of Most Wins as a Captain at the World T20 Cup. Dhoni has led the Men in Blue 33 matches in 6 different World T20 Cups (which is also a record 🤷‍♂️) and won 20 matches. The next one in line is former Proteas skipper G. Smith and West Indies captain D. Sammy, who led their sides to 11 victories each. Although records are meant to be broken, this is one such record which is out of sights for any cricketer in the world.

Talking about his individual stats, he has scored 1112 runs at an average of 37.06 in 72 T20Is and 529 of those runs came at the biggest international T20 competition.

Most Titles Won as a Captain

Captain : D. Sammy

Country: West Indies

In T20 cricket, there is no better feeling for a cricketer than winning the World T20 Cup. The joy of winning the coveted championship is doubled when you are the leader of such a team. D. Sammy is one such captain who has led his nation to the ultimate T20 glory. However, Sammy is also the only captain to have won the World T20 Cup on two separate occasions.

West Indies won their first World T20 Cup under the leadership of Sammy in 2012. The Windies defeated the home-side Sri Lanka in the final by 36 runs and every cricket fan witnessed one of the most entertaining post-trophy celebrations on the cricket field. West Indies captained by Sammy, once again wrote their names on the trophy in 2016 World T20 Cup. This victory was even sweeter than the last one, as C. Brathwaite smacked B. Stokes for 4 consecutive 6s in the final over to complete an impossible run-chase at the Eden Gardens.

The name of D. Sammy has been engraved in gold in cricket history books and the Windies require another leader like him as they failed to qualify for the Super-12 stage of this World T20 Cup.
