Sunita Chandra’s demise leaves hockey world in grief

Former Indian women’s hockey team captain Sunita Chandra took her last breath on Monday morning. According to her son Gaurav, Chandra died in her sleep at their residence. Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Kamal Nath expressed his condolences to her family and acknowledged her contribution to the nation in the field of sports.

CM Kamal Nath called her the “pride of the country” and stated that she was “excellent player” who brought laurels to India showcasing her exceptional hockey prowess.

Chandra was an Arjuna award recipient and she played for Indian women’s hockey team between 1956 to 1966.

She skippered the team from 1963 to 1966. She is survived by her husband Yatish and her two sons and her last rites will be performed on Tuesday.
