South Africa, also known as Proteas, has announced the squad for the World T20 Cup 2024, to be played next month. Talking about the team’s performances in the previous editions, they played in the semis in 2009 and 2014. In the other editions, they failed to qualify for the last four. In 2022, they lost to the Netherlands unexpectedly to bow out of the tournament.
Pakistan benefited from this result as they got a realistic chance to qualify for the semis. The 2009 winners needed to win against Bangladesh to reach the last four. Meanwhile, given the squad they have had in 2021 and 2022, they can be regarded as unlucky to not win the title.
South Africa Squad:
A. Markram (c), O. Baartman, G. Coetzee, Q D Kock, B Fortuin, R. Hendricks, M. Jansen, H. Klaasen, K. Maharaj, D. Miller, A. Nortje, K. Rabada, R. Rickelton, T. Shamsi, T. Stubbs
Traveling reserves: N. Burger and L. Ngidi.
U19 World Cup 2014 winning captain, Markram will lead the team for the first time in the World T20 Cup. He has led the team in ODI format on occasions too. Apart from Rickleton, Baartman, Burger, all the players have the experience to play in the marquee events.
