BCCI President Sourav Ganguly has revealed the plan of a four-nation ODI super series from 2021 onwards. The former India skipper was in England with his team of officials for a meeting with the England & Wales Cricket Board (ECB) and a four-nation tournament was reportedly raised in that meeting.
The annual tournament, proposed by the BCCI, will involve India, England, Australia and a fourth team from a leading cricketing nation.
"Australia, England, India and another top team will feature in the Super Series, which begins in 2021, and the first edition of the tournament will be played in India," Ganguly said at an event.
The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has also approved discussions with the BCCI over the proposed four-nation tournament.
“We meet regularly with other leaders from the major cricketing nations to share learnings and discuss topics that impact our sport.
A four-nation tournament was raised at a meeting with the BCCI in December and we are open to discussions with other ICC members to see if this concept can develop.” As per ECB.
However, Cricket Australia (CA) is yet to comment on the subject.
Earlier this year, ICC had proposed to conduct one major tournament every year from 2023 to 2031. But, The Big Three- BCCI, CA and ECB rejected the proposal.
It will be interesting to see how the ICC will react to this Super Series idea as the rules and regulations of the ICC do not allow any board to conduct a multi nation series featuring more than three teams.
