Sourav Ganguly refuses to comment on four-day Tests

BCCI President Sourav Ganguly reveals that he is yet to receive the International Cricket Authority’s proposal to make four-day Tests mandatory as part of the World Test Championship from 2023. When asked about his views on four-day Tests, Ganguly refused to make any comment on the proposal so far. He said at the Edens Garden, "First we will have to see the proposal, let it come and then we will see. It's too early to say. Can't comment just like this”.

Ganguly has been discussing about the Super series idea and has also given an update on the formation of Cricket Advisory Committee that will appoint the national selectors. But he is currently not ready to talk about four-day Test concept.

This started when Cricket Australia CEO Kevin Roberts expressed his complete support on the idea of four-day Test matches. In fact, the Aussies are likely to play their first four-day Test against Afghanistan at home next summer. As per Tony Irish, the head of international federation of cricketers, the International Cricket Authority committee will formally consider trimming Tests to four days from five for the 2023-2031 cycle, while taking the World Test championship into account.

A four-day Test is not a new concept in either domestic or international cricket. In fact, one match of such format was played between England and Ireland earlier this year and another was played in 2017 between South Africa vs. Zimbabwe.

International Cricket Authority intends to stage more global events, considering the BCCI’s demands for an expanded bilateral calendar, popularity of T20 Leagues and the cost of hosting five-day Tests.
