S. Mandhana joins Australian Women’s T20 League winners, Adelaide

India Women’s vice-captain and opening batter S. Mandhana has been signed by Australia Women’s T20 League side, Adelaide. The team has won the last two seasons and is looking to win three back-to-back titles this year. Meanwhile, the left-hander is a pre-draft signing and this is her fourth team she will play for.

Before Adelaide, she previously played for two-time winners Sydney, two-time winners Brisbane and Hobart. The opening batter holds the record of joint-highest individual score. The Mumbaikar hit 114 not out against Melbourne while playing for Sydney in 2021.

“I always look forward to playing in Australia, and I’m excited about the opportunity to contribute to a team with a history of success like the Strikers,” Mandhana said. “I’m thrilled to continue working with Luke. Our previous experiences together have been so rewarding, and I’m looking forward to building on that.”

The two-time winners have tried to sign the 28-year-old for a number of seasons but couldn’t do so. Last season, Mandhana decided not to take part in the tournament and instead played for Maharashtra in domestic cricket to work on her captaincy skills.

S. Mandhana led Bangalore Indian Women’s T20 League title

In March this year, the Mandhana-led Bangalore team won their maiden title across Men’s and Women’s cricket. They beat Delhi in the final to lift the Indian Women’s T20 League. While Mandhana captained the side, L. Williams was head coach. Both individuals will work together again although Mandhana might not lead Adelaide.

“Smriti is an exceptional talent, and we are thrilled to welcome her to the Strikers,” Adelaide Head coach Williams said. “Her technical skill, experience and strategic insights are a tremendous asset for us. I know firsthand the dedication and energy she brings to the team and on the field. Her expertise and leadership will be invaluable as we drive for success in the upcoming season.”
