Detailed Match Report

Day 1

Virat Kohli won the toss and opted to bat first. Australia handed over the Test cap to all-rounder Cameroon Green. It was a mixed day for India. After losing early two, Kohli put fifty-plus stands with Pujara and Rahane to charge Indian batting. India were on the driver’s seat with losing only three wickets on 189. Virat Kohli got runout due to a foul call from Rahane, and Australia formed a mini-collapse. The new ball hurt the Indian middle-order, and they lost four wickets in the final hour. India finished the day on 233/6, following Kohli’s hard-fought 74.

Day 2

Australia wrapped up India’s tail by picking the last 4 wickets on 11, and the visitors finished the first innings on 244. Starc scalped four wickets, and Cummins picked 3 wickets.

Indian bowlers provided a good start as Bumrah removed both openers early. Indian fielding was not up to the mark as they dropped absolute sitters. After the first session, Ashwin shined with his spin and got dangerous Smith. He also bagged Travis Head and Green to leave Australia 79/5. At one stage, Australia were 7 down on 111, but Tim Paine charged the Aussie innings by scoring fighting 73 to take Australia 192. India got a vital 53-runs lead in the first innings.

India lost Prithvi Shaw in the 2nd innings and later, survived the day with Mayank Agarwal and night-watchman Bumrah in the middle.

Day 3

It was a pure batting disaster from India on Day 3. Cummins got Bumrah early, and later, Aussie pacers formed a big collapse. With a fine catch from Green, Australia also got a big man, Kohli. For the first time in a Test inning, no player scored in double-digit. Hazlewood completed his fifer and also scalped his 200th wicket. Shami faced an injury when India were nine-down on 36, and Kohli declared. It was India’s lowest total in Test history, surpassing 42, which was scored in 1974. Australia chased down 90 runs with eight wickets in hand and has taken a 1-0 lead in the series.

Star Performer of the Match

Josh Hazlewood is our star performer of the match. The right-arm pacer knocked out the Indian batting unit in just one session. His spell on the third day changed the picture of this test match. Hazlewood scalped five wickets for just 8 runs and also completed 200 wickets in Test format. His one spell made all the difference in this game.
