Europa League winner Sevilla make their return to Champions League with an away fixture with Chelsea on Tuesday night in Group E. Both sides are placed with Ligue 1 side Rennes and Russian side Krasnodar. Chelsea finished their last season’s campaign in Round-of-16 as they suffered a 7-1 aggregate defeat to eventual winner Bayern Munich. Lampard’s men finished their last 4 Champions League season in the round of 16. The Blues qualified for the current edition after finishing fourth in the Premier League last season. In 2020-21 Premier League, Lampard's side picked up eight points from five matches thus far. In the previous encounter against the Saints, Chelsea held for a 3-3 draw after a two-goal lead. Chelsea have won just one fixture from the previous five Champions League matches. In 2019-20, they also suffered a defeat against a Spanish club, Valencia at home.
Sevilla, on the other hand, is fresh off a 1-0 defeat to Granada on Saturday in La Liga. Julen Lopetegui's side has added seven points from their first four games of the season. Sevilla clinched the Champions League ticket after finishing in top four in La Liga last season. In August, they edged past Inter Milan to win Europa League. Their Europa League campaign was impressive as they beat top football clubs during the winning streak. The Spanish Outfit reached into the quarter-finals of the Champions League three years ago and they have won 16 of their 30 matches in the group stages of this competition. They also showed a tough fight to Bayern in last month’s UEFA Super Cup defeat. The Stamford task is not so easy but they can walk away with sharing one point to change the outcome in the home game later this year.
