Chelsea welcome Barnsley for Wednesday's EFL Cup third-round encounter at the Stamford Bridge. The winner of this game will face either Leyton Orient or Tottenham Hotspur in the fourth round. In their last Premier League encounter, Chelsea lost to Liverpool on their home ground courtesy of Sadio Mane’s brace. Lampard’s side was unbeaten in their last 13 league matches against the defending champions. To move on from the defeat, Chelsea would aim to win EFL Cup since 2014-15. Lampard’s side was the runnerup in 2018-19, losing to Manchester City in a penalty shootout and in last season, they knocked out by Manchester United in round four.
Meanwhile, Barnsley kick off their championship 2020-21 campaign with a defeat to Luton Town and their previous season was not so good, finishing 9th in the second tier. Gerhard Struber's men have won two matches in EFL Cup as they edged past fellow Championship sides Nottingham Forest and Middlesbrough to reach into the third round. If they pull off a win here, it will be the first-ever fourth-round entry for the Tykes in EFL Cup. Both sides will face each other for the first time after 2007-08’s FA Cup match where Burnsley had a final laugh with 1-0 to seal the semifinal spot.
