For the first time after 2017, The Champions Trophy was revived a few years back. The tournament was scrapped in 2017 to replace it with the Test Championship. The Apex Council decided to bring it back in 2021-22 and allocated the hosting rights. For the first two editions (2025 & 2029), Pakistan and India respectively have been given the hosting rights.
At this point, India traveling to Pakistan doesn’t seem likely unless some bold calls are taken. Meanwhile, talking about the history of the tournament, it started as a knockout tournament in 1998. Nine teams played in the tournament with eight teams playing against each other in the Quarterfinal, Semifinal, and Final format. The same format was continued with eight teams.
Between 2002 to 2006, 12 teams played in the tournament with different formats used in these editions. From 2009 to 2017, eight teams played in the tournament with the same format. Meanwhile, let’s have a look at the teams that have won the tournament.
Pakistan is the holder of the title as of now. This is the only global title they are holding currently as they are yet to win another One Day World Cup and World T20 Cup after 1992 and 2009 respectively. Australia is the only team to defend their title. Former champions, West Indies failed to qualify for the 2025 event.
They couldn’t even qualify for the One Day World Cup 2023 and the ranking during the tournament decided the eight teams for the upcoming tournament. Sri Lanka, who finished ninth in the 50-over World Cup, also failed to qualify for the tournament.
