Match story
Young keeper-batsman, Rishabh Pant held his calm at the end and played an exceptional inning to take Delhi Capitals over the line. Rishabh pant scored 49 runs off 21 balls to make his team win the first playoff encounter since 2012. Now Delhi Capitals will play Chennai Super Kings in the qualifier 2 with an aim of becoming the second finalist of the season after Mumbai Indians.
In a do or die match, Delhi capitals skipper, Shreyas Iyer won the toss and elected to field first. Delhi capital bowlers supported his decision and bowled at the right areas making Hyderabad batsmen feel uncomfortable. Although Sunrisers Hyderabad got off to a decent start, they didn’t capitalize on it due to the loss of wickets at regular interval. New Zealand opener, Martin Guptill and Indian middle-order-batsman were the only players to cross 30 run mark for Sunrisers Hyderabad. Martin Guptill scored 36 off 19 balls while Manish Pandey looked nervous and scored 30 runs off 36 balls. In the end, Sunrisers Hyderabad, with the contribution of lower order batsmen, managed to put up a competitive total of 162 runs on the board.
When Delhi Capitals came to chase the target, Prithvi Shaw and Shikhar Dhawan gave the team a flying start. At one stage, it looked that Delhi will win the match easily, but back to back wickets of Prithvi Shaw and skipper Shreyas Iyer in the 11th over of the innings shifted the momentum towards Sunrisers Hyderabad. After this, Rishabh Pant and Colin Munro batted sensibly to keep their team in the match. But, again a twist came up in the 15th over where Rashid Khan took 2 wickets that again opened the doors for Sunrisers Hyderabad in the match.
After this, it was all Rishabh Pant in the match. The player took the match from Sunrisers Hyderabad helped Delhi step closer towards victory. In the 18th over of the innings, he smoked 2 sixes and 2 fours. Another twist tried turning the fate of the game towards the end, needing 12 off 12 balls, the team lost Sherfane Rutherford, Rishabh Pant and Amit Mishra quickly. But at the end, Kemo Paul smashed a boundary to finish things and take Delhi Capitals to qualifier 2.
Rishabh Pant was named ‘Player of the Match’ for this sensational 49 runs.
