First Innings (SL 262/9)
Shanaka and Dhawan both become 25th ODI captains for their respective nations. Ishan Kishan and Suryakumar Yadav made their ODI debut. Avishka Fernando and Bhanuka started the opening. It was another change in the opening slot for Sri Lanka which shows their poor consistency in ODIs. Both added 49 runs before Chahal struck for India. India bagged three more wickets in middle-overs and Kuldeep bagged his first.
Asalanka looked solid and added 49 runs for the 5th wicket before dismissing against Deepak Chahar. Shanaka also got a good start but he couldn’t get fifty. Karunaratne added some acceleration in death-overs and Sri Lanka posted a formidable total of 262. Chahal, Kuldeep and Chahar picked two wickets each. Pandya brother also shared two wickets.
Second Innings (IND 263/3)
India got a solid start and Shaw delivered what he does in T20 format. Shaw scored 43 off just 24 balls and De Silva provided a breakthrough when India crossed 50 in just 5 overs. Ishan Kishan continued his acceleration and scored a fifty on his debut.
Meanwhile, Dhawan completed 6000 runs in ODI format and also touched the mark of 10000 runs in international cricket. He scored his 33rd fifty and India maintained their run rate which put pressure on Sri Lanka. Hosts picked Pandey but the damage was already done. Suryakumar Yadav and Dhawan finished the job and India won the first game by 7 wickets with 13.2 overs left.
