Team Preview
2019-20 Champions League winner Bayern Munich hosts Spanish Club Atletico at Allianz Arena on Wednesday to kick start their campaign. The German Giants defeated PSG 1-0 in the final of the last edition and they won Bundesliga title for the 8th successive year. Their glorious winning streak ended with a 4-1 loss against Hoffenheim in the domestic season. After the defeat, they added four consecutive wins in all competition. The tight schedule is a big worrying sign for Flick as they had to play twice in 48 hours last week. Flick’s side would aim to see another quality performance from last season’s top scorer Robert Lewandowski who has netted seven goals and three assists in Bundesliga 2020-21.
Meanwhile, Atletico would take a fresh start to the season after losing to RB Leipzig in last season's quarter-finals. Diego Simeone’s men started their domestic campaign with a 6-1 loss against Granada but they played two back-to-back draws to Huesca and Villarreal respectively. The 2-0 victory against Celta Vigo sent them to 8th spot. The new signing from Barcelona, Luis Suarez is in phenomenal form, scoring three goals and an assist from four La Liga appearances. Los Rojiblancos won two times in their six meetings with Bayern Munich and lost their previous two matches. The Champions League record for Spanish Outfit is not favouring them as Atletico have lost five of their last six Champions League matches to German opponents in away fixtures.
