The two tennis giants Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic will compete against each other for the 50th time in a blockbuster semi-final of Australian Open 2020. The semi-final is scheduled on 30 January at 2 PM (IST) in Rod Laver Arena. In the quarter-finals, the 38-year-old Swiss sensation played a fabulous quarter-final with American grafter Tennys Sandgren 6-3 2-6 2-6 7-6(8) 6-3, and saved remarkable seven points to clinch a five-set epic. The six-time former Australian Open champion Federer enters his 15th semi-final in Melbourne.
While the reigning champion Novak Djokovic thrashed Canadian player Milos Raonic 6-4 6-3 7-6(1) in a straight-sets quarter-finals. He defended well and diffused Raonic’s big serve in a flat match on Rod Laver Arena. In his post-match interview, the Serbian player also paid tribute to his friend and basketball legend, Kobe Bryant, who died in a helicopter clash recently. After edging Milos, Djokovic breezes into his eighth Australia Open semi-final.
Djokovic currently leads the head-to-head record with Federer 26-23, since he sealed last victory over the Swiss player in a five-set final of Wimbledon last year – one of the greatest Grand Slam finals of all time.
Apart from these two tennis stars, the first two semi-finalists in the women's singles are Sofia Kenini, who overcame Ons Jabeur, and Ashleigh Barty, who defeated Petra Kvitova in the quarter-finals.
