South Asian Games: India Reach Top Spot In Medal Tally With 56 Medals

India continues to conquer its medal rush in the ongoing South Asian Games 2019. On Thursday, Indian athletes maintained their winning streak, leading the country to the top spot in the medal tally. India consolidated the top position by securing its best medal haul on a single day so far. On the fourth day of the competition, India overtook Nepal to reach the highest medal tally. The nation leads the table with 62 gold, 41 silver and 21 bronze for a total of 124 medals. India added 30 gold, 18 silver and 8 bronze in its kitty on Thursday. Nepal stands at second spot with 36 gold, 27 silver and 38 bronze summing up to 101 medals, followed by Sri Lanka with 107 medals (17 gold, 35 silver, 55 bronze).

India dominated in diverse sports events including Wushu, Weightlifting, Swimming, Shooting and Taekwondo, breaching the 100-medal mark with a whopping 56 medals on Day 4.

Wushu

The incredible wushu players accounted for seven yellow medals. Suraj Singh clinched the first gold, followed by Punam (women’s 75kg), Deepika (women’s 70kg), Sushila (women’s 65kg), Roshibina Devi (women’s 60kg) and Sunil Singh (men’s 52kg). O. Bidyapati Chanu fetched a bronze in women’s sansou 56kg.

Swimming

In swimming, India amassed 11 medals, with four gold, six silver and one bronze. Likith Selvaraj Prema won a gold medal in men’s 200m breaststroke, while Danush Suresh won a silver in 2:19.27. Apeksha Delyla Fernandes and Divya Satija also acquired gold medals in the tournament.

Weightlifting

On Thursday, India bagged four gold medals in total. Jhilli Dalabehera, Sneha Soren, Sorokhaibam Bindyarani, and Siddhant Gogoi are the prominent names of the Indian weightlifters who cliched gold for the country in their events.

Taekwondo

Taekwondo brought six medals to India encompassing three gold, two silver and one bronze. The notable participants who showcased their prowess at SAG are: Purva Dattary Dixit, Ruchika Bhave and Margaret Maria (one gold each), Niraj Choudhary and Akshay Hooda (silver) and Lakshya (bronze).

Track and field

Field athletes have equally contributed to the scoreboard as other sports events. Triple jumper Karthik Unnikrishnan is the only gold medal recipient in athletics. Mohammed Salahuddin jumped 16.16m to earn a silver, Surender Jayakumar, Aparna Roy and Priya Habbathanahally pocketed a silver each in their respective events. While K. S. Jeevan bagged a bronze medal in the men’s 400m category.
