Indian Cricket Board honorary secretary, J. Shah is reported to become the next Apex Council chairperson. Currently, the G. Barclay is the chairperson. Recently, he announced that he will step down after his stint ends this November. Leading media outlets have reported that Shah might take over. If this happens, he will be the fifth Indian to lead the World Cricket Body.
Four Indians who led Apex Council
- J. Dalmiya
The Bengal-based businessman was the first Indian to fill the position in 1997. The late administrator worked at the post till 2000. Under him, the Apex Council managed to stage two Champions Trophy in 1998 and 2000 and organized the 1999 World Cup on their own However, he left the position with some bitterness but managed to make a comeback as the President of the Indian Cricket Board.
- S. Pawar
The Member of Rajya Sabha also held the position between 2010 and 2012. Apart from the Apex Council, he also led the Indian Board, notably when the Men In Blue lifted their maiden World T20 Cup in 2007. His stint consisted of three years between 2005 to 2008. His last stint as an administrator in a cricket body was between 2013 to 2017.
- Srinivasan
Despite being ousted as the Indian Cricket Board president due to various corruption related issues, he managed to become the chairperson of the Apex Council in 2014. He worked at this position for one year before he vacated for his former co-worker from the Indian board in 2015. Currently, he doesn’t hold any position in any cricket-related body.
- S. Manohar
A lawyer by profession, he took over from Srinivasan in 2015. He continued as the chairperson till 2017. Apart from leading the global body, he worked as the president of the Indian board twice (between 2008 to 2011 and 2015 to 2016).
If J. Shah becomes the president of the Apex Council, he will be the youngest among all the presidents that the World Cricket Body has seen so far. He is currently 35 years old while others were much older during their respective stints.
