The upcoming Asian Women’s T20 Cup will start on July 19 in Dambulla, Sri Lanka. For the first time since 2012, eight teams will participate in the tournament. Same format consisting of four teams divided into two groups of four each will be followed this time around. The first edition of the tournament was played in 2004 between India and Sri Lanka only.
In 2005 and 2006 editions, Pakistan started playing alongside India and Sri Lanka. However, in the 2008 edition, Bangladesh made their way. Between 2012 to 2022 editions, six to eight teams have played in the tournament. In the 2022 edition, Thailand, the 2012 debutants, made it to the semis, losing to eventual champions, India. Apart from this, UAE made their debut a couple of years back.
Malaysia made their debut in the 2018 edition, won by Bangladesh. Talking about the participating teams this edition – India, Pakistan, Nepal and the UAE have been slotted in the Group A. In the Group B, teams such as hosts Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Thailand, and Malaysia have been slotted in the Group B. The top two teams from both groups will qualify for the semis.
