5 Things To Look Forward To In 2020

  • U-19 Cricket World Cup

2020 will kick-off with the U-19 Cricket World Cup, starting from 17 January till 9 February 2020. The young sensation, Priyam Garg, will lead the 15-member squad of Indian team for the tournament to be held in South Africa. India has had a great history in this tournament, having won four editions since 1988.

Ahead of the tournament, India will compete a three-match one-day series against South Africa U19, and a quadrangular series against South Africa U19, Zimbabwe U19 and New Zealand U19.

  • European Cup 2020

The next year going to be a treat for football fans as the much-anticipated European Cup will begin from 12 June to 12 July 2020. The biggest football spectacle will be conducted in 12 countries. Portugal are the defending champions as they won the 2016 title.

The format will remain the same as the previous edition. The top two teams in each of the six final tournament groups will enter the round of 16 along with the four best third-placed finishers.

Here are the main dates of the tournament:

26 March: Play-off semi-finals
31 March: Play-off finals
12 June: Opening game: Turkey vs Italy, Olimpico in Rome
12 July: Final, Wembley Stadium (London)

  • T20 World Cup

All the cricket fans will get hooked to the TV screens as the seventh international cricket championship – Men’s T20 World Cup – is slated to begin from 18 October to 15 November 2020 in Australia. In 2016, West Indies emerged as the winners and 2020 will be the target for India to earn the champion’s title.

Besides Men’s T20 World Cup, people are also looking forward to the Women’s T20 World Cup as well that will start months before the former. From 21 February to 8 March 2020, women’s World Cup will be underway.

  • Tokyo 2020

Also known as Summer Olympics, this multi-sport event is scheduled to take place in Tokyo, Japan for the second time, from 24 July to 9 August 2020. This event brings those sports into the limelight that are overshadowed by the popularity of mainstream sports. It includes equestrian, taekwondo, archery and many more and what's even more interesting is the fact that Indian athletes have successfully qualified for the tournament. Tokyo 2020 has garnered worldwide attention even before its arrival, as World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) banned Russia for four years in a range of sports due to its involvement in doping scandals.

  • World Rugby U20 Tournament

The 13th international rugby union competition will be organized at a venue called Campo de El Pantano in Villajoyosa, Spain. The rugby tournament will set in motion from 14 to 27 September. It is the first time Spain and the Federación Española de Rugby (FER) will hosting the tournament. This age-grade competition gives a great platform to the aspiring rugby players to nurture their talents and 2020 is going to be no different.
